Many of us, particularly those familiar with how automobile vehicles are built, know about catalytic converters. This is a type of exhaust that converts toxic gases and other pollutants into less harmful substances.
Most vehicles have catalytic converters, but this doesn’t mean that all of them are equipped with them.
What about various electric cars? For example, do Teslas have catalytic converters? Can an automobile vehicle even function without one?
Teslas don’t have catalytic converters since they are electric cars. Catalytic converters are designed to turn the toxins created in the engine into water and less potentially harmful substances.
So, since Teslas are battery-powered, they don’t need catalytic converters. This is also one of the most common reasons people advocate for electric cars – they are better for the environment and our health.

Why don’t Teslas have catalytic converters?
As we all know, Teslas are electric cars. And this is exactly why they don’t need catalytic converters. In Teslas, there’s no combustion engine, which means that there’s no need for an exhaust.
With that, there’s nothing to convert. So, Teslas don’t have catalytic converters, and they rely solely on the power of the electric battery.

Are cars without catalytic converters, like Teslas, better for the environment?
Catalytic converters are meant to turn harmful chemicals and substances created during internal combustion in engines into less harmful particles. Because of that, cars that use them tend to be worse for the environment.
Teslas and other fully electric vehicles don’t need catalytic converters at all. As a result, they are completely emissions-free, which makes them clean and much better for the environment.
Still, how clean your Tesla or electric vehicle is depends on the power grid you use to charge it. For example, if the area you charge it in relies on heavy coal usage, you’re not having the same positive environmental impact as someone who charges their Tesla using a renewable energy grid.
Unfortunately, this is often out of our control. Still, it does make it better that you’re driving an electric vehicle instead of a fuel-powered car.
Can you install a catalytic converter on a Tesla?

There’s also no place to install a catalytic converter on a Tesla.
Are there any non-electric cars that don’t have catalytic converters?
Catalytic converters are present in most modern cars. In fact, in many regions of the world, it’s a requirement for cars with internal combustion to have catalytic converters.

So, with that said, the only cars without catalytic converters these days are fully electric vehicles.
Still, it is possible to drive a fuel-power car without a catalytic converter, but it’s not a good long-term solution.
This is because a fuel-powered car that’s missing a catalytic converter won’t perform as well as it should. Without this converter, the oxygen sensors in your car won’t work properly, and the engine’s performance will suffer as a result.
So, even though driving without a catalytic converter won’t damage your engine per se, it will significantly reduce engine power.
In certain regions of the world, it’s also illegal to drive without a catalytic converter.
Plus, removing it yourself may be considered a criminal offense. So, unless your catalytic converter was stolen and you’re waiting for a replacement, don’t remove this type of exhaust yourself.
To sum it up, the only cars that can safely (and also legally) drive without catalytic converters are fully electric vehicles, such as Teslas.
Since Teslas are electric vehicles, they don’t have catalytic converters. This type of exhaust helps turn harmful substances created during combustion into less harmful ones.
So, since electric cars don’t rely on any type of combustion, they don’t need to be equipped with catalytic converters.
